The Ven Benedict George Hoskyns MA (23 February 1856 – 11 September 1935) was an eminent Anglican priest in the first third of the 20th century.〔(National Archives )〕
He was born on 23 February 1856 into an ennobled family: his father was Canon Sir John Leigh Hoskyns, 9th Bart.〔(thePeerage.com )〕〔"Who was Who" 1897–2007 London, A & C Black, 2007 ISBN 978-0-19-954087-7〕 He was educated at Bradfield, Haileybury and Jesus College, Cambridge, where he graduated BA in 1878.〔UNIVERSITY INTELLIGENCE . The Leeds Mercury (Leeds, England), Saturday, 11 June 1887; Issue 15343〕 He rowed in the 1877 Boat Race, notable for being the only dead heat in the race's history.
He was ordained in 1880 and was Curate of St Mary's, Southampton until 1888. He was then Vicar of St Denys in the same city〔"The Clergy List, Clerical Guide and Ecclesiastical Directory" London, Hamilton & Co 1889〕 until 1895, and also Chaplain to the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, Hampshire Regiment.〔SOUTHAMPTON NEWS .The Hampshire Advertiser (Southampton, England), Saturday, 28 January 1893; pg. 8; Issue 4866. 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.〕 After this he was a Canon Residentiary at Truro CathedralThe Times, Tuesday, 17 September 1895; pg. 10; Issue 34684; col G ''Ecclesiastical intelligence''〕 and Diocesan Missioner 〔ECCLESIASTICAL APPOINTMENTS .The Standard (London, England), Friday, 20 September 1895; pg. 6; Issue 22221. 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.〕 until February 1902, when he was appointed Vicar of Brighton (and Chaplain to the 1st Sussex. Royal Garrison Artillery Volunteers).〔(London Gazette )〕 He was then Archdeacon of Hastings from 1915 until 1920. He was Archdeacon of Chichester from 1920 to 1934 and a Residentiary Canon at its cathedral. He died on 11 September 1935.〔''Death Of The Rev. B. G.
